In a move aimed at facilitating overseas medical treatment, Bangladesh Bank has increased the foreign exchange limit for travel on health grounds from $10,000 to $15,000 or its equivalent. The updated directive, issued through circular on Monday, instructs authorized dealers (ADs) to prioritize direct remittances to foreign hospitals or medical institutions.
The revised policy allows the enhanced amount to be sent via international prepaid, debit, or credit cards, while retaining the existing provision of releasing up to $5,000 in physical US dollar notes within the overall limit. The adjustment comes under paragraph 2, chapter 12 of the Guidelines for Foreign Exchange Transactions-2018 (GFET), with all other related regulations remaining unchanged.
Authorized dealers have been directed to promptly inform their clients of the revised limits, ensuring smoother access to foreign exchange for critical medical needs.
The central bank's decision reflects efforts to ease financial constraints for patients seeking treatment abroad while maintaining regulatory oversight.
