Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has said that doctors should dedicate themselves to medical services with their responsibility, creativity, mindfulness and ability.
He said that discipline and accountability are needed in the medical sector.
The Chief Adviser made this statement at the inaugural ceremony of the two-day Civil Surgeon Conference 2025 at the Shapla Hall of the Chief Adviser's Office on Monday.
This is the first time this conference has arranged in Bangladesh.
At the conference, Professor Muhammad Yunus said, "We all understand that the healthcare system is unhealthy, and we blame each other… but blaming won't solve the problem. We need to find a solution so that we can fix the healthcare system."
"If all the countries and nations in the world can provide better healthcare than us, then what is our negligence, what is our lacking that prevents us from doing so... Let's ask ourselves how we can fix this," he added.
"With all the medical equipment or facilities we have, if we can make up our minds to change in this situation, then I am sure that Bangladesh's health care will improve by 25 per cent," the chief adviser said.
At the conference, Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum congratulated all doctors for risking their lives to treat patients during the Covid pandemic and the July Movement.
Referring to civil surgeons as the main players in healthcare, she said, "Although we have achieved considerable success in the health sector, Bangladesh's health sector is still far behind due to the obvious shortage of manpower, medicine and equipment. But civil surgeons will use their intellectual acumen and responsibility to take the medical sector forward."
The health adviser further said that the promotion work is underway by creating 7,000 supernumerary posts. She expressed hope that not only doctors but also nurses will be recruited.
Professor Dr Md Sayedur Rahman, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said that the improvement of the health sector is possible only if the problems of promotion, posting, budget and shortage of medicines are solved. He also mentioned that a unique health card will be made to restructure the health sector.
Dhaka Civil Surgeon Dr Md Zillur Rahman and Director General of the Department of Health Dr Abu Zafar also spoke at the conference.
