Lightning kills two in Habiganj, Sherpur

Two people were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents in two districts - Habiganj and Sherpur.

HABIGANJ: An elderly man was killed after being struck by lightning on the bank of the Dhaleshwari River in Lakhai Upazila of the district on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Azgar Ali, 70, a resident of Sujonpur Village in the upazila.

According to police, at around 9:30 m, Azgar Ali went to the bank of the Dhaleshwari River to graze his cattle. During a rainstorm, he was struck by lightning at around 11:30 am and died instantly.

Officer-in-Charge of Lakhai Police Station Md Bande Ali confirmed the incident.

NALITABARI, SHERPUR: A farmer was killed and another injured by lightning strike in Nalitabari Upazila of the district on Sunday evening.

The incident took place in Andharupara Village under Noyabeel Union of the upazila at around 6 pm.

The deceased was identified as Khabir Uddin, 45, son of Jalal Uddin, a resident of Kapasia area under Jogania Union in the upazila.

The injured person is Sakul Uddin, 20.

Local sources said that 12 farmers were harvesting Boro paddy at a field in Andharupara Village in the evening. At that time, thunderbolt struck them, which left Khabir Uddin and Sakul Uddin critically injured.

Other farmers then rescued the injured and rushed them to Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Khabir Uddin dead.

Physician of the health complex Dr Abdur Rauf confirmed the incident.
