Despite more than three months passing since the removal of the nameplate from Jagannath University's only female dormitory, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, the university authorities have yet to finalize a new name, leaving students frustrated.
On February 6, 2025, the nameplate bearing the name Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib was officially removed from the hall's entrance. This decision was part of a broader wave of changes across the country following the fall of the Awami League government in the wake of the July-August movement and public uprising. In its aftermath, numerous educational institutions and public establishments associated with the Sheikh family-including Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-underwent renaming efforts.
Jagannath University was no exception to this trend. The removal of the hall's nameplate sparked discussions among students and faculty alike. In response, students proposed several alternative names that reflect both historical and contemporary figures. Suggestions included Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, honoring the renowned philanthropist and educationist; Felani Hall, commemorating Felani Khatun, a teenage girl tragically killed at the India-Bangladesh border; and Ria Gope Hall, remembering a six-year-old who was fatally shot by a stray bullet while playing on her home's rooftop on July 19.
Following these developments, the university administration assured students that a committee had been formed to recommend a new name for the hall. However, despite repeated assurances, little progress has been made in the decision-making process, fueling growing discontent among students.
