The government has announced unprecedented support for Buddha Purnima celebrations across Bangladesh, with Dhaka University (DU) serving as the focal point for a groundbreaking Peace Rally and Harmony Festival.
On Sunday, Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki revealed that official backing now extends to five districts simultaneously, marking a historic first for Buddhist cultural celebrations.
"This is just the beginning," he declared, confirming plans to expand government-supported celebrations nationwide in the coming years.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan led the Peace Rally from the National Museum, emphasizing the university's commitment to religious inclusivity and cultural preservation.
"Our institution proudly stands at the forefront of promoting Buddha's timeless teachings of peace and contentment," he said while inaugurating the festivities.
Rally participants prominently paraded through the university grounds, including the historic Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), highlighting the campus's significance as a cultural melting pot. University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed addressed the gathered crowd, praising "exemplary student participation across religious backgrounds."
