Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Ameer, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, has issued a statement commemorating Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami, the former party chief who was executed in 2016 for war crimes, calling for the continuation of his “unfinished mission” to transform Bangladesh into an “Islamic welfare state.”
In the statement released on May 10, Dr. Rahman praised Nizami as an “Islamic scholar, visionary political leader, and martyr,” highlighting his contributions to Islamic education, parliamentary democracy, and industrial development during his tenure as minister in the former BNP-Jamaat coalition government.
“Nizami’s efforts in securing government recognition for Qawmi Madrasa education and his leadership in agriculture and industry were milestones in our national progress,” the statement read.
Dr. Rahman also referenced international recognition of Nizami, noting his inclusion in global surveys listing influential Muslim leaders.
Jamaat's current leader called on the public to join the party’s movement to fulfill Nizami’s goal of establishing an Islamic welfare state, asserting that his execution was a result of “political conspiracy.”
The statement concludes with a prayer for Nizami’s acceptance as a martyr and a renewed appeal for national support in realizing the vision he left behind.
