Jamaat blames JCD leader for Sitakunda attack, demands justice

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer of Chattogram North unit Alauddin Shikder and Secretary Abdul Jabbar strongly condemning and protesting a violent terrorist attack on a peaceful rally organized by the Upazila Jamaat in Sitakunda, allegedly carried out under the leadership of a local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader.

According to the statement issued on May 10, a group of armed assailants led by Kamrul Hasan Redwan, Organizing Secretary of the Chhatra Dal's Salimpur Union unit, allegedly attempted to kill Shahidul Islam, head teacher of SM Pilot High School and a Jamaat leader in Sitakunda, by luring him out of his home and attacking him with sharp weapons on Wednesday, May 7.

In response to this incident, on Friday, May 9, a peaceful protest rally was held by Sitakunda Upazila Jamaat. During this gathering, the same group led by Kamrul Hasan Redwan reportedly launched a sudden attack, opening fire on the rally. Jamaat leaders Mohammad Ali and Abdus Salam sustained serious gunshot injuries, and at least 12 others were critically wounded by machete attacks.

The attackers also reportedly surrounded Anwar Siddique Chowdhury, the Organizing Secretary of Chattogram North District Jamaat and the party's nominated MP candidate for the upcoming national election, along with 7-8 others. Police were later called to the scene and successfully rescued them.
