Govt mulls ban on AL as Shahbagh blocked over demand

Hasnat Abdullah, Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Chief Organiser (South), declared 'Shahbagh Blockade' programme during Friday afternoon rally near Intercontinental Hotel.

Sarjis Alam, NCP Chief Organiser (North), made a brief statement on his verified Facebook account at 6:22 PM. He said that "a united Shahbagh is waiting for BNP."

Opposition voices note an unprecedented military and UN presence in Cox's Bazar, yet public and political discussion remains unusually muted.

Despite the issue's link to national sovereignty, politicians stay silent. Critics claim the government is staging a distraction in Dhaka to divert attention from the real situation.

Rally commenced approximately 2:45 PM with leaders, activists and citizens carrying placards demanding ban on Awami League.

Previously NCP members staged a sit-in outside Chief Adviser's residence since yesterday evening, pressing for Awami League ban.

Government officials are giving serious consideration to widespread demands to outlaw Awami League over authoritarian rule and terrorist activities. Officials have established contact with political groups and promised swift action following consultations.

Interim government confirmed these developments via Chief Adviser's official Facebook page this afternoon, noting government is examining UN report documenting terrorist activities by Awami League leaders. Government has already designated Chhatra League as terrorist organisation following public pressure.

"Bangladesh's progress begins when it earns title 'Bangladesh Without Awami League.' We shall block this road. Interim government remains deaf to our voices. We shall occupy this area until notification banning Awami League is issued," Hasnat Abdullah stated.

NCP protesters have maintained presence outside Chief Adviser's Jamuna residence since Thursday night. Friday morning witnessed continued demonstrations with anti-Awami League slogans.

Shahbagh intersection echoes with chants demanding ban on Awami League as protesters blocked junction following nearby rally. Scene evoked memories of heated July 2024 anti-discrimination student protests.

After 4:30 PM, members from various organisations including Jamaat-Shibir, Hefazat-e-Islam, Gano Adhikar Parishad and Amar Bangladesh Party joined students and citizens. Crowd chanted numerous slogans:

"Ban League!", "Not Delhi, it's Dhaka-Dhaka!", "My brother is in grave, why is killer free?" and "Slavery or freedom? Freedom, freedom!"

Blockade halted traffic around Shahbagh, closing roads towards Science Lab, TSC and Banglamotor. Protesters vowed to maintain blockade until demands were met.

Shahbagh police OC Khalid Mansur confirmed sufficient police deployment at scene.

This movement continues July 2024 protest momentum which arose from public anger against long Awami League rule, eventually forcing Sheikh Hasina's resignation and interim government formation. With fresh allegations of crimes against Awami League as an organisation, protests have reignited nine months later, heightening political tensions throughout capital.
