Filmmaker granted bail in cheque bounce case

Filmmaker Choyonika Chowdhury was granted bail on Thursday after surrendering before a Dhaka court in a cheque fraud case. She appeared before the 7th Joint Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Bulbul Islam and submitted a bail petition through her lawyer, which the court approved.

Earlier, on May 6, the same court had cancelled her bail and issued an arrest warrant after she failed to appear for a scheduled cross-examination. Her lawyer had sought time, but the court rejected the request.

The case dates back to 2013 when producer Rashedul Islam Riaz filed a complaint alleging that Choyonika took Tk 2.3 lakh for a drama titled Jibon Shundor Hok but failed to deliver. Although she issued a cheque in the same amount, it was dishonoured multiple times. A legal notice was later ignored, prompting the lawsuit.

The court has scheduled June 26 for arguments in the case.
