The Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Convener and former advisor to the interim government, Nahid Islam, has warned of a renewed "March to Dhaka" movement if swift action is not taken to ban Awami League (AL).
The warning came in a statement posted from his verified Facebook page on Friday, during the ongoing "Shahbagh Blockade" program.
In his post, Nahid Islam affirmed that Shahbagh sit-in would continue and expressed hope that, regardless of political affiliation, all pro-July forces would remain united in their opposition to AL and in defense of national sovereignty.
He noted that blockade programs had already begun in various parts of Dhaka city and cautioned that, without a prompt decision, the entire country could once again march on the capital.
He further stated: "All pro-Bangladesh forces must unite to demand the ban of the fascist, terrorist, anti-sovereignty, anti-independence, anti-July, anti-democracy, anti-Islam, anti-women, and anti-humanitarian Mujibist organization—AL."
Nahid also referenced the landmark 2024 anti-discrimination student movement, during which the original "March to Dhaka" campaign had led to the eventual downfall of the AL-led government.
Since the night of May 8, NCP leaders and activists have been staging demonstrations in front of the residence of the Chief Advisor to the interim government in the Jamuna area, demanding the banning of AL. The protests continued through Friday afternoon, with demonstrators gathering at the main gate of the residence.
By Friday evening, Shahbagh intersection had turned into a center of political agitation, echoing with chants demanding the dissolution of AL, as part of the escalating "Shahbagh Blockade" movement.
