Mothers, our forever heroes

When we think of superheroes, we often imagine capes, powers, and epic battles. However, some heroes of our lives do not wear capes- they wear sarees, salwar kameez, aprons, or business suits, and they answer to the name, "Amma," "Ammi," "Ammu," or simply, "Maa." A mother is not merely the one who brings a child into the world; she is the one who rises every day to embrace the role of a caregiver, a guide, and a protector. She endures without complaint, sacrifices without hesitation, and loves without limits. Yet, how often do we stop to appreciate all that she does?

Motherhood begins with pain, a kind that cannot be put into words. Nine long months of carrying another life inside her, battling physical exhaustion, morning sickness, hormonal rollercoasters, and anxiety for the future. Withstanding hours of labour in the delivery room, she is put to the test of her strength and willpower, which doesn't stop when the baby is born. That's only the beginning.

From the moment we take our first breath, our mothers begin building the foundations of our lives. It is their fingers we cling to when we learn to walk, their voices we mimic when we learn to talk, and their patient hands that feed us as we learn to eat. Every tiny milestone we achieve begins with her gentle encouragement and silent support. She wakes up before dawn to prepare our breakfast and pack our tiffins. When we get sick, she takes care of us until we get better, she sews our uniforms and costumes for school shows, or cooks us our favorite meals during exam season. She remembers our allergies, our schedules, our fears, and our dreams, sometimes better than we do ourselves.

Mothers are our very first teachers, the ones who introduce us to the world and guide us through its earliest lessons. They teach us how to speak kindly, how to be polite, how to tie our shoelaces, and how to get back up after we fall. They quietly shoulder our burdens so we can focus on learning and growing, never letting us feel the weight of their own struggles. A mother's love doesn't need grand gestures; it lives in the everyday moments- the warm bowl of khichuri on a rainy afternoon, the stern look when we have done something wrong, the comforting hug when everything feels like it's falling apart, and the unwavering faith in us even when we doubt ourselves.

Napoleon Bonaparte once said, "Give me an educated mother, I shall promise you the birth of a civilized, educated nation." That quote still rings true today. A mother who values education passes on the gift of knowledge, empathy, and curiosity. She raises children who do not just succeed, but who grow up to make a difference. She shapes the next generation of thinkers, leaders, and dreamers.

So today, let us pause. Let us look beyond the everyday routines we have come to expect from our mothers, and recognize the invisible labour, the sleepless nights, the silent tears, and the infinite strength they carry. Let us thank them not just with gifts or flowers, but with our time, respect, and efforts.

To every mother, whether biological, adoptive, or someone who stepped in with love and care, you are appreciated. You are powerful. You are irreplaceable.

Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible moms around the world. Thank you for everything.
