Dozens of students, under the leadership of National Citizens Party (NCP) members, staged a demonstration outside the residence of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Jamuna, on Wednesday night, demanding immediate deregistration and political ban of Awami League.
The protest began around 10 PM, spearheaded by Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organiser for NCP’s Southern Region. Holding banners and chanting slogans, demonstrators called for legal action against leaders of the then-ruling party and demanded an official roadmap for its removal from Bangladesh’s political arena.
In a post made earlier on social media, Hasnat had announced the sit-in and vowed not to leave until authorities took concrete steps toward banning the Awami League. He framed the protest as a campaign for justice and political accountability.
NCP Convener Nahid Islam also took to Facebook, declaring that the ruling party’s “fate would be sealed tonight.” Expressing disappointment over what he described as “continued delays in delivering justice,” Nahid accused authorities of inaction and urged broader political and civil society forces—including families of victims from past political violence—to join the ongoing protests.
The demonstrators emphasized their demand for a decisive transition, holding the Awami League responsible for what they called years of injustice, oppression, and impunity.
There was no immediate response from the Awami League or the office of the Chief Adviser regarding the protest.
Security presence in the area was visibly increased as the sit-in continued into the night.
