Angry individuals set fire to the office of the daily Desh Shongjog newspaper published from Khulna on Thursday evening due to referring Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister in a news report.
The incident occurred around 7:00 PM in the Choto Mirzapur area of the city. The perpetrators of the arson attack remain unidentified.
The editor of the newspaper, Munshi Mahabubul Alam Sohag is the office secretary of the Khulna Metropolitan Awami League.
According to locals, a group of 30-40 people arrived shortly after the Maghrib prayers, broke the lock of the office shutter, and dragged out tables, chairs, and other belongings onto the street before vandalizing and setting them on fire.
Nearby residents later brought the fire under control. Police and journalists visited the scene after receiving the news.
Confirming the matter, Khulna Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Hawladar Sanwar Hossain Masum said that police had been dispatched to the location upon receiving information about the incident.
Notably, the front page of Thursday's Desh Shongjog featured a headline regarding the death of an Awami League leader, stating, "Awami League including PM Sheikh Hasina condolences on death of Kazi Enayet."
The report referred Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister and also identified former Members of Parliament as current Members of Parliament.
