Dhaka University (DU) is aiming to reduce its financial reliance on government funding, according to Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan.

Speaking at a cheque handover ceremony on Thursday, he emphasised the importance of alumni contributions to achieve this goal.

"We want to reduce our financial dependence on the government. For this, alumni must step forward. Encouragingly, we are already receiving positive responses from them. If we don't reduce this dependence, various pressures will bend our backbone," said Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan.

The ceremony marked a significant step towards this initiative, with former student Dr Bashir Uddin Ahmed donating Tk 1 million for 'Floor Expansion Project' of Department of Statistics. This substantial contribution demonstrates growing alumni support for the university's independence efforts.

Several prominent university officials attended the event, which was held at lounge adjacent to Vice-Chancellor's office. These included DU Treasurer Professor Dr M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, National University Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Md. Lutfor Rahman, and Chairman of the Department of Statistics Professor Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan.

The donation reflects positive response Vice-Chancellor mentioned, with alumni stepping up to support their alma mater's growth and autonomy. This backing is crucial as the university seeks to strengthen its position without facing pressures that could compromise its independence.
