The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has announced its decision to file separate corruption cases against former Member of Parliament from Noakhali-3, Mamunur Rashid Kiron, and his wife, Jesmin Akhter, over allegations of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income.
At a media briefing held at the ACC headquarters, Md Akter-ul-Islam, Deputy Director of the Commission’s Public Relations Department, confirmed the development.
According to ACC findings, Mamunur Rashid, during his tenure as an MP from the Begumganj-based constituency, allegedly acquired illicit assets worth Tk 49.54 crore. Investigators also flagged suspicious financial transactions amounting to Tk 211.56 crore across 22 bank accounts linked to his business entities.
The ACC has prepared to press charges against him under multiple laws, including Section 27(1) of the ACC Act 2004, Sections 2 and 3 of Section 4 of the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2012, and Section 5(2) of the Corruption Prevention Act 1947.
Meanwhile, his wife Jesmin Akhter is accused of unlawfully accumulating wealth amounting to Tk 1.83 crore, allegedly using her husband's influence. She too faces legal action under Section 27(1) of the ACC Act 2004, Section 5(2) of the Corruption Prevention Act 1947, and Section 109 of the Bangladesh Penal Code.
ACC officials have submitted their preliminary investigation report to the commission’s headquarters and will proceed with filing the cases following formal approval.
