ICT to grill 3 ex-IGPs on Jahajbari killing of nine youths end-May

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque along with three other former top police officials were produced before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Wednesday in connection with a case filed over the killing of nine youths suspected of militancy at Jahajbari in the capital's Kalyanpur in 2016.

The case alleges that a drama was staged under the guise of a raid on an alleged militant hideout in a building known as Jahajbari where nine Islamist-leaning youths were shot dead in cold blood. In response to these allegations had earlier arrested three police officers including the former IGP on March 6 this year. The other two are former DMP Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia and former Deputy Commissioner of DMP's Mirpur Division Md Jasim Uddin Mollah.

A three-member bench of the ICT including the Tribunal Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and retired District and Sessions Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury heard on Wednesday and granted permission to interrogate the former IGP and three others at the Safe Home of the investigation agency of the ICT. According to the court's order, Shahidul will be interrogated on May 25, Asaduzzaman on May 27 and Mollah on May 29.

The tribunal fixed July 14 as the next date for the hearing of the case. The order came after the state sought additional time to continue its investigation. Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim represented the state during the hearing while prosecutors BM Sultan Mahmud and Faruk Hossain were also present.
