Toronto-based midfielder Shamit Shome has taken a significant step towards representing Bangladesh on the international stage after receiving his Bangladeshi passport on Monday. The development comes just days after he applied for the document at the Bangladeshi Consulate in Canada, marking a crucial milestone in his journey to don the red and green jersey.

Shamit's path to eligibility began on 20 April when he obtained his birth registration. This was followed by a clearance from the Canada Soccer Association on the first of May, paving the way for his passport application. With the passport now in hand, the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) is preparing to submit the necessary paperwork to FIFA for final approval.

One of the BFF Vice-Presidents Fahad Karim said, "Shamit has received his Bangladeshi passport. We will now proceed with the next steps, preparing all documents for FIFA's approval. Once FIFA grants permission, there will be no obstacles to him playing for Bangladesh."

The timing is critical as Bangladesh gears up to face Singapore in the Asian Cup qualifiers in Dhaka on 10 June. BAFF is eager to include Shome in the squad, believing his inclusion alongside Hamza could significantly bolster coach Cabrera's team.

With FIFA's approval pending, Shamit Shome is now just one step away from fulfilling his dream of representing Bangladesh on the international stage.
