An allegation of arson has been raised at the residence of Jahangir Alam, 57, president of the Jamalpur Union Workers’ Welfare Federation—a body affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami—in Sadullapur upazila of Gaibandha.

In protest of the alleged attack, the victim's family held a press conference on Monday at noon in the courtyard of Jahangir Alam’s house in Gopalpur village under Jamalpur union.

Mufti Maulana Shafiuzzaman Sumon, Assistant Secretary of the Sadullapur upazila unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Maulana Shamsuzzaman Ekram, Secretary of the Jamalpur Union unit; Ward President Shafiul Alam Boku; Jahangir’s wife Parul Begum; son Emran Mia, were also present at the conference.

In a written statement, Emran Mia, son of the victim, alleged that Shahidul Islam from Patilakora village, Jahangir Mia and Hossain Ali Fakir from Srikola village—along with several others—were active members of the previous "fascist regime" and had long-standing enmity with their family due to political rivalry.

He claimed that, as a result of this hostility, the accused individuals poured petrol and set fire to their home on the night of April 28 around 12:30 AM. Two houses, along with furniture, cattle, cash, and other valuables worth over Tk 1.3 million, were destroyed in the blaze. Jahangir Alam sustained burn injuries and was admitted to the hospital.

The victim's family has demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice swiftly.

Officer-in-charge of Sadullapur Police Station Taj Uddin Khandaker confirmed that a complaint had been received regarding the incident. "Police have visited the location, and legal action will be taken following an investigation," he said.
