Police have arrested a suspected gold smuggler named Shubho Ghosh, 32, with 10 gold bars in Sharsha upazila of Jashore district.
The arrested man is Shubho Ghosh, son of Sunil Ghosh, hails from Janmatop village under Singair Police Station in Manikganj district.
He was arrested at around 1 PM on Sunday from in front of the Bagachhra Union Parishad office inm the upazila.
According to police sources, acting on a tip-off, Sub-Inspector Alamgir Hossain of Sharsha Police Station conducted an operation with his team while performing checkpost duty.
During the drive near Bagachhra Union Parishad, they apprehended the suspect.
Upon searching his body, police recovered 10 gold bars weighing 1.192.69 kilograms from the right pocket of his jeans.
The estimated market value of the seized gold is around Tk 1.2 crore. The gold was allegedly being transported toward the border with the intent to smuggle it into India.
Nishat Al Nahiyan, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Navaran Circle), confirmed the arrest and stated that legal proceedings against the detainee are currently underway.
