SATKHIRA, May 3: Police arrested a local imam on Friday in connection with the death of a college student in Tala Upazila of the district.

The incident took place on Thursday when a college student died after setting herself on fire reportedly being failed in a romantic relationship.

The deceased was identified as Sanjida Akter Tuli, daughter of Kamrul Islam Sardar, a resident of Ghona Village under Islamiakati Union in the upazila.

According to locals, Tuli proposed the imam of a nearby mosque Maulana Aminul Islam for a romantic relationship. Aminul rejected her proposal and went into hiding approximately 15 days prior to the incident.

Being enraged by this and unable to contact him, the girl allegedly poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire.
Her cries of distress alerted locals, who rescued and took her to Tala Upazila Health Complex.

Tragically, Tuli died while being transported from Khulna to Dhaka.
