The Central Jam-e-Mosque of Khulna University (KU) is not just a religious establishment for students; it has become an unforgettable landmark of the university.
With its brilliant fusion of modern architecture and Islamic heritage, this mosque has emerged as one of Khulna’s major attractions. Designed to blend harmoniously with natural surroundings, the mosque’s most striking feature is its massive dome, which is entirely inspired by Middle Eastern architectural styles.
In 2003, the then Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. M. Abdul Kadir Bhuiyan, initiated construction of the mosque. The initial design was prepared by Muhammad Ali Naki, a then faculty member of Architecture Discipline. However, after laying the mosque’s foundation, construction remained stagnant for many years.
In 2014, the then Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mohammad Fayek Uzzaman, took the initiative to resume and complete the mosque’s construction. At this stage, some modifications were made to initial design and final layout was completed.
The head of architectural redesign team during this phase was Associate Professor Md. Sheikh Maruf Hossain from Architecture Discipline. The mosque was officially inaugurated on August 28, 2020. Spanning one acre, the mosque has now become heart of the university.
The mosque’s architectural style is visually stunning and a superb example of Islamic artistry. It is designed for optimal natural ventilation, keeping the interior cool at all times, eliminating need for air conditioning. Covering an area of approximately 15,000 square feet, the mosque features a grand central dome and thousands of intricate Islamic geometric patterns that enhance its beauty.
Situated in the main campus, the mosque is located right in front of three male dormitories; Khan Jahan Ali Hall, Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah Hall, and Bir Sreshtho Ruhul Amin Hall. Nearby are Academic Buildings 1, 2, and 3, as well as the Kazi Nazrul Islam Central Library. Its central location makes it easily accessible and an essential part of the university’s aesthetic appeal.
The mosque's senior Imam and Khatib, Mufti Abdul Quddus, stated that the university administration is committed to enhancing the mosque and promoting true Islamic teachings. Under current Vice-Chancellor's guidance, several innovative steps have been taken. Recently, an interactive display board was installed, which allows detailed information about the mosque to be presented to worshippers in a more engaging way.
He also mentioned that during Ramadan, Taraweeh prayers include a full recitation (Khatam) of the Holy Quran in 27 nights, as per government guidelines. For the first time this year, inspired by Vice-Chancellor, special midnight prayers (Qiyam-ul-Lail) were arranged, offering a deeply spiritual experience for the worshippers.
Professor Sharif Mohammad Khan, president of the mosque’s management committee, said that various future development projects and mosque-centered programs are in pipeline, which will be implemented soon.
Khulna University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim, noted that the mosque is not merely a religious site, but a spiritual hub for KU’s teachers, students, officers and staff. Its peaceful atmosphere and unique architectural design provide mental tranquillity and serve as a suitable place for promoting Islamic education.
This mosque has become a priceless part of Khulna University’s heritage and culture, gaining popularity for its design, beauty and spiritual significance. Devout Muslims from distant areas also visit to pray and admire its architectural splendour.
