A labour leader was killed after being hit by a bus on Barishal-Dhaka highway at Wazirpur upazila in Barishal district on Thursday.
The incident occurred around 2 PM at Sonar Bangla area in the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Md Manik Gazi, 55, Vice-President of the Otra Union Workers' Party and son of Abdul Haq Gazi from Otra village in the upazila.
According to locals, Manik participated in a rally organised at Ichladi bus stand in the morning to mark May Day, the International Workers' Day.
Afterward, he again joined a rally organised by Barishal District Workers' Party with other leaders and activists from the upazila.
After the rally, he arrived at Sonar Bangla Bazar in Wazirpur with his colleagues.
While crossing the road there, Manik was hit by a passenger bus traveling from Dhaka to Barishal. He was thrown onto the road by the impact and sustained serious injuries.
Later, locals rescued and took him to Wazirpur Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
The bus that hit Manik fled the scene after the incident but locals chased and managed to stop it at Notun Hat area of Babuganj. However, the driver and helper had escaped.
Confirming the matter, Wazirpur Highway Police Station in-charge Md Aminur Rahman said that the bus involved in the incident has been seized.
Efforts are underway to catch the absconding driver and helper, he added.
