Biggest-ever CU Convocation to be held on May 14

CHATTOGRAM, Apr 30: The fifth Convocation of Chattogram University, the biggest-ever in the country with nearly 23,000 students will be held on May 14 next. In the function Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, former professor of Chattogram University's (CU) economics department, is set to visit the university after 36 years.
He will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters (D Litt) degree.

He will also attend it as a Convocation speaker.

Dr. M Yeahhia Akhtar, Vice Chancellor of CU,  told the Daily Observer, "we have been working hard to make, one of the biggest event in the history of the Chattogram University a success."

"It is one of the biggest-ever convocation in the country with a large numbers of attending students of 23,000 who had passed from 2011 to 2023," he said.

He also narrated several steps taken by the CU management to provide more services to the students like, distribution of washing machines in the halls, arrangement of Counselling, part time jobs in the Library etc.

"We shall make the holding of the Convocation regularly in every year, so that the students should get certificates just after passing the examinations," CU VC confirmed.

Dr Yunus is expected to inaugurate several key projects at the university. CU's special convocation is going to be held after nine years.

Yunus joined CU's Economics Department as an associate professor in 1972 and later served as its head. He was promoted to professor in 1975 and remained in the position until 1989. Additionally, he previously served as president of the Chattogram University Teachers' Association.

Meanwhile, the CU authorities have unveiled the logo of the convocation.

The university started its academic programme on 28 November in 1966 with classes of MA (Preliminary) programme with only 200 students in the departments of Bangla, English, History and Economics under the faculty of Arts.

 After a short while Medical, Engineering, Law and Education Colleges situated outside the university campus were incorporated as separate faculties, and thus the university's educational activities kept expanding.
The first regular Convocation of Chittagong University was held in 1994.
