Discussion On Climate Change Held In Khulna

Integrated efforts underscored to ensure sustainable support to internal migrants

KHULNA, Apr 30: A significant roundtable discussion on climate change-induced internal migration was held at the Khulna Press Club auditorium on Tuesday at 10:30 am. The event was organized by Caritas Bangladesh, Khulna Region.

The meeting was arranged under the Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA) Project, aimed at reducing disaster risks and supporting climate adaptation in high-risk areas of Khulna and Satkhira districts.

The chief guest at the event was Deb Prasad Pal, Additional Divisional Commissioner. Special guests included Md. Enamul Haque, Convener of Khulna Press Club, Md. Abdul Karim, District Relief and Disaster Management Officer.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Suman Kumar Malakar, Programme Officer of the Disaster Management Department, Caritas Khulna Region. Later, Dr. Md. Ismail Hossain, Assistant Professor at the Disaster Management Department of KUET, presented a research-based report on climate change adaptation and internal migration in the Khulna city.

Following the presentation, an open discussion was held with participation from government officials, local representatives, internal migrant representatives, journalists from national and local newspapers, and television media representatives.

Speakers emphasised the importance of integrated efforts to address the impacts of climate change and ensure sustainable support to internal migrants.

The session was moderated by Md. Ibrahim Hossain, Field Coordinator of the DRR project at Caritas Khulna Region. The event formally concluded with closing remarks from the chief guest.

Speakers expressed hope that such initiatives would raise public awareness and support policymakers in making evidence-based decisions to tackle the challenges of climate change.
