KAMALNAGAR, LAXMIPUR, Apr 30: After the end of a two-month ban on fishing in the Meghna River in Kamalnagar Upazila of the district, fishermen started fishing since mid-might on Wednesday at 12am.
According to fishing station sources, about 15,000 fishers have gone to the river.
During the ban time, fishers completed their all fishing preparations including net repairing and new net making.
According to sources at the Upazila Fisheries Department, in order to facilitate increasing Hilsa production and Jatka protection, the fishing ban was imposed across 100 kilometres, ranging from Shatnol in Chandpur District to Char Alexandar in Ramgati Upazila.
During this period (March-April), all types of fishing activities including Hilsa transport, marketing, stocking and exchanges remained suspended, he added.
The ban was implemented jointly by the Taskforce Committee comprising Fisheries Department offices at district, upazila and union levels. During this time, several campaigns were conducted in the river, the official added, and the fishers were given VGF rice.
Turja Saha, Member Secretary of the Upazila Taskforce Committee and Senior Fisheries Officer, said, there is no longer any bar for going to the river for fishing. But the campaign will continue for stopping catching of Jatka, the official maintained.
