Prisoner dies in Narsingdi jail

A 35-year-old inmate who fell sick at the Narsingdi district jail died at a hospital on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Rokon Mia, son of Md Ali, a resident of Nozorpur union under sadar upazila in the district.
Confirming the matter, Narsingdi jail superintendent Md Shamim Hossain said that Rokon had been serving jail in a narcotics case filed in 2023.

He fell sick and was taken to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival, he said.

Rokon’s family members, however, claimed that he died around 9:00 PM but police informed them after 13 hours of his death.

Rokon might have been tortured to death, they alleged.

Narsingdi Assistant Commissioner and Magistrate Rafiur Rahman said that hospital report clearly stated that he was brought dead.

“He was received dead at the hospital at night. The main reason behind his death could be determined after an autopsy,” he said.

The jail superintendent said that the inmate might have died due to complications related to diabetes or drug addiction.
