The High Court has granted bail to former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in a sedition case.
On Wednesday, a High Court bench comprising Justice Md. Atoar Rahman and Justice Md. Ali Reza issued the ruling.
Lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya represented Chinmoy Krishna Das in court, while the state was represented by Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R Haque and Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan.
Lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya stated that, as a result of today's bail order, there is no legal obstacle to Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari’s release from prison.
Earlier, on February 4, the High Court issued a rule asking why bail should not be granted to Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in the sedition case.
The same bench issued a two-week rule regarding his bail.
On October 25, a large rally of the Sanatani (Hindu) community was held in Chattogram under the leadership of Chinmoy Krishna Das. A few days later, on October 31, a sedition case was filed against him alleging desecration of national flag. 18 others were also named as accused in the case.
Another large rally, also under Chinmoy’s leadership, was held in Rangpur on November 22.
Subsequently, on November 25, he was arrested in Dhaka in connection with the sedition case.
The next day, when a bail application was submitted, Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate rejected it and ordered that Chinmoy be sent to prison.
Following this decision, clashes broke out in Chattogram between Chinmoy’s followers and law enforcement officials and lawyers. During the unrest, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was hacked to death outside the court premises.
Since then, Chinmoy has remained in prison. On January 2, Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court rejected his bail application. He then applied for bail in the High Court.
