A man was hammered to death allegedly by his rivals over the ownership of a piece of land in Gazipur's Kaliganj upazila on Wednesday.
The incident took place around 11:00 AM at Durbati village in the upazila.
The deceased was identified as M Ismayeel Palowan, 46, son of late Alauddin Palowan, a resident of the same village in the upazila.
According to locals, there had been a long standing dispute between Ismayeel and Golzar Hossain over the ownership of a piece of land. When Ismayeel along with his two younger brothers went to harvest paddy from the land, Golzar, Tofazzal, Nabil and Sufol attacked them with lethal weapons.
They, at one point, assaulted and hammered Ismayeel, leaving him critically injured on the spot.
Later, locals rescued him from the spot and took him to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex where on duty doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Confirming the matter, Kaliganj Police Station officer-in-charge Alauddin said that a team of police recovered the body and sent it to Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police, however, arrested an accused involved in the incident.
They were trying to arrest the rest of other accused involved in the incident and legal action would be taken against those found involved, the OC added.
