A man was killed in a violent attack over local dominance in Jhenidah's Sadar Upazila on Wednesday.
The clash took place around 1 PM at Dighirpar village under the upazila.
The dead Mosharraf Hossain, 55, was brutally hacked to death at his own residence. Six members of his family were also injured in the incident. The injured—Anisur Rahman, Motiur Rahman, Mizanur Rahman, Mohammad Ali, Jahangir Hossain, and Nahid—have been admitted to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital for treatment.
According to Ahmad Ali, a local Union Parishad (UP) member, Dighirpar village had long-standing political and social divisions between groups led by Awami League leaders Shahid Sikder and Abu Sayeed. These groups were locally aligned with Alimuddin and Ahmad Ali, respectively. After the fall of what he termed the “fascist Hasina regime,” members from both sides joined ranks with opposition parties, namely Jubo Dal leader Shahabul and BNP leader Zahid Biswas, which further intensified the rivalry.
Former UP member Abdul Kuddus stated that a previous clash had occurred on April 28 between the rival factions. Following that, on Wednesday afternoon, Ahmad Ali’s supporters allegedly launched a sudden attack on Mosharraf Hossain’s house. Taking advantage of the absence of Alimuddin’s supporters—who had reportedly fled due to police presence—Ahmad Ali’s group entered the house and carried out a violent assault, leaving seven people critically injured. Mosharraf later died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Jhenidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al-Mamun confirmed the incident. He told that police were deployed immediately, the situation is currently under control, and additional forces have been stationed in the area to prevent further violence.
