A Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Wednesday granted remand for three high-profile figures in connection with separate murder cases stemming from anti-discrimination protests in the capital.

Former adviser to Sheikh Hasina, Salman F Rahman, ex-law minister Anisul Huq and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun have been placed on remand in different terms.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atikur Rahman issued the remand order.
Mamun was granted a three-day remand in a case filed over the killing of protester Md Russell in Jatrabari on August 5 last year. Salman received a three-day remand in the murder of Monir Hossain during a quota reform protest in Bhatara on July 19, while Anisul was placed on a two-day remand related to the death of Abdul Jabbar in Badda.

Investigators had initially sought seven days' remand for Mamun and five days each for Salman and Anisul. The prosecution was led by Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki, while defense lawyers opposed the remand pleas.

Salman and Anisul were arrested at Sadarghat on August 13 last year while attempting to flee by river. Mamun was detained from Uttara on September 4. All three have previously been remanded in connection with the several cases.
