BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said that the Interim government should have talked with all political parties before deciding to give a humanitarian passage to the people of Arakan.
He said this at a road meeting during a mass assembly at Khagrabari Sheikh Bazar in Jagannathpur Union, Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila.
Fakhrul said, "We don't want to become like Gaza. We don't want war. The decision made by the Yunus government about helping the people of Arakan should have been discussed with all political parties."
Talking about reforms and elections, he said, "What is reform? I don't understand that. I understand democracy and people's rights. The main duty of the government is to hold fair elections. We gave that responsibility to them."
"Professor Yunus is smart and won the Nobel Prize, but he is not a politician," Fakhrul added.
He said, "People could not vote for the last 15 years. Now, there is a chance. Interim Government's main job is to arrange elections for the country's good and people's safety."
"You must fix a date and share a clear roadmap for the election soon," he said.
Fakhrul also said that people want a government that they choose. "Right now, there is no MP. If people have problems, who will they go to? That is why we are saying again and again: there must be reforms and elections."
He accused the Awami League of turning the country into a terrible place. "They stole crores of taka through violence, false cases, disappearances, killings, and torture. People got angry and gave their lives to remove Sheikh Hasina. After the movement, Begum Zia sent a message from the hospital."
He said there was a lot of pain and bloodshed. "Let us forget revenge and build a beautiful Bangladesh together."
District BNP General Secretary Mirza Faisal Amin, Sadar Upazila BNP President Abdul Hamid, General Secretary Mahabub Hossain Tuhin, and many other BNP leaders and activists were also present at the event.
