BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday said people of the country have not fought against fascism and sacrificed their lives to bring any great person to power, because it is not possible for them to bring back democracy in the country.
Speaking to reporters after separate meeting with A-Am Janata Dal, National Awami Party (Bhashani) and Bangladesh Peoples Party at BNP Chairperson Gulshan office he said this in response to the comment made by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus in an interview with Al-Jazeera that, "People of Bangladesh are still considering the Interim Government as their best answer."
He said, "The people of Bangladesh have not fought and struggled, have not made so many sacrifices, to give the responsibility of Bangladesh to a great man. There is no reason to believe that the people of Bangladesh will have to wait for another great man to provide a solution for the country's democracy."
He said if some special or powerful people are working against democracy and the people's right to vote, then people should not support them. These people are going against democracy and against changes needed to improve elections.
Amir Khasru said, "16-year of struggle in Bangladesh was to bring back democracy, give people their right to vote, and return power to the people."
He said if a government is truly elected by the people, then it must be responsible and answerable to the people, no matter which party is in power.
Khasru also said BNP and many other political parties have protested against the government led by Sheikh Hasina. Together, 50 parties have said clearly that the national election should be held before December.
"They want the planned reforms to be agreed upon and done quickly. They also said that the Election Commission should announce the election date soon and start working on a plan for the election," he said.
BNP leaders Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, and Barkat Ullah Bulu met with leaders of three other political parties in Gulshan.
The Chairman of NAP-Bhasani, Azharul Islam, led his party. The A-Am Janta Party was led by its President, Col (Retd) Moshiuzzaman. Nazma Akhtar, the Acting Chairperson of the Bangladesh People's Party, also attended the meeting.
