The ministry-level committee tasked with advising the government on the withdrawal of political harassment cases has recommended the withdrawal of a total of 8,832 cases filed during the 16-year tenure of the Awami League government, spanning from 6 January 2009 to 5 August 2024.
Following a meeting held on Sunday at the Law Ministry, Committee Chairman Asif Nazrul, who also serves as Adviser for Law and Expatriate Welfare, shared this information.
During the meeting, the committee recommended the withdrawal of 517 additional cases, bringing the total number of recommended cases to 8,832. The committee reviewed petitions submitted by aggrieved individuals through the solicitor wing of the Law Ministry.
The committee has decided to publish the lists of withdrawn cases on the websites of the Home Ministry and the Law Ministry, enabling the public to access detailed information about the cases.
On average, each case involved approximately 50 accused individuals. Based on this estimation, around 500,000 leaders and activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami were implicated in these cases.
The Adviser also noted that the process of receiving applications for the withdrawal of political harassment cases remains ongoing. Aggrieved individuals can submit their petitions to the government via email at '
[email protected]' or directly to the solicitor wing of the ministry.
