Police recovered a floating body of a painter from the Bhogai River at Nalitabari upazila in Sherpur district on Monday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Jahangir Alam, 26, son of Chhamidul Islam, a resident of Shimultala Mahakhali area of Baghber union in the upazila.
According to locals, Jahangir left home on Saturday evening, stating he was going to a shop and he did not return home at night.
Being tensed, his family tried to contact him on his mobile phone but it was switched off.
Later, his family started searching him here and there but failed to trace.
At one point, on Monday afternoon, locals spotted a body floating in the Bhogai River east of Shimultala Government Primary School and informed the police.
After recovering the body from the river, his family identified it as Jahangir's.
Confirming the matter, Nalitabari Police Station officer-in-charge Sohel Rana said that one person named Alamgir Hossain has been detained for interrogation in connection with the incident.
The body was sent to Sherpur General Hospital morgue for an autopsy, the OC added.
