Former Law Minister Anisul Huq was physically assaulted by a section of lawyers at Narayanganj court premises on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred as he was exiting the courtroom following a remand hearing.
Earlier, Senior Judicial Magistrate Mainuddin Kadir granted a four-day remand for Anisul Huq in connection with the murder of madrasa student Hafez Soleiman during the anti-discrimination student movement in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had sought a seven-day remand.
Anisul Huq was brought to the court from Dhaka Central Jail under tight security. However, as he exited the courtroom after the hearing, a group of lawyers slapped him. Police immediately intervened and escorted him back to jail for his protection.
According to police, Hafez Soleiman, 19, was shot during protests on August 5 in the Shimrail area along the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway. He died while being transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Following the incident, on August 22, a case was filed at Siddhirganj Police Station by Soleiman’s brother-in-law, Shamim Kabir. The case named 51 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the prime accused, along with several high-profile Awami League leaders such as Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Dipu Moni, Anisul Huq, and Zunaid Ahmed Palak, as well as former MP Shamim Osman.
