On Sunday (April 27), EC's Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the information.
Court declared BNP's mayoral candidate, Ishraque Hossain, as winner of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election on March 27, 2025, which had been held on February 1, 2020.
The verdict was delivered by Chief Judicial Magistrate of Dhaka, Mohammad Nurul Islam.
Ishraque Hossain was present in court during the verdict announcement.
In the ruling, government’s gazette regarding former mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, who ran from Awami League, was annulled. Ishraque Hossain, candidate from BNP, was declared mayor of DSCC.
It is reported that Ishraque Hossain had filed a case on March 3, 2020, seeking annulment of DSCC election results due to allegations of irregularities, corruption and unacceptability in election process.
In the case, then Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, Returning Officer Mohammad Abdul Baten and then DSCC Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, along with six others, were made respondents.
After the verdict, Ishraque’s lawyer, Rofiqul Islam, stated, “We filed the case to cancel the election due to irregularities, corruption and unacceptability. We had requested to declare Isharaque Hossain as mayor. Today, the court ruled in our favor and declared Ishraque Hossain as mayor.”
