Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized a large quantity of illegal timber during an operation in Longadu upazila of Rangamati district earlier on Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Rajnagar Battalion (BGB-37) launched a raid in the Jarulchhara area, where they recovered 277 CFT of gamari timber abandoned at the site, confirmed Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Nahid Hasan.
He said illegal logging and timber smuggling from forest areas are causing serious environmental degradation and leading to deforestation in the hilly regions. Unscrupulous timber traders are believed to be behind the ongoing destruction, smuggling valuable timber from remote areas.
Lt. Col. Nahid Hasan added that BGB has intensified both its operations and intelligence efforts to ensure border security and prevent smuggling. He affirmed that such drives will continue and be further strengthened in the coming days.
Since the beginning of the year, Rajnagar Battalion has carried out 31 anti-smuggling drives, seizing a total of 2,277.73 CFT of illegal timber worth approximately Tk 39.69 lakh.
