Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has demanded installation of CCTV cameras at every polling center to ensure transparency in the upcoming national elections.
The party has sought financial assistance from European Union (EU) to implement this initiative, citing significant costs involved.
Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer, Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, told journalists following a meeting between Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and EU Ambassador Michael Miller at the party’s central office in Dhaka's Moghbazar on Sunday.
When asked if EU had inquired about Jamaat’s stance on the election, Taher responded that the party trusts the timeline proposed by the Chief Adviser overseeing the election process.
Taher further mentioned that Jamaat has invited EU to send election observers for the upcoming polls.
Regarding broader cooperation, Taher said discussions with EU have been ongoing for a long time. Jamaat proposed allocating a dedicated zone for EU to invest more in Bangladesh’s booming garment sector, given the country's substantial garment exports to Europe.
Addressing concerns about women's rights and anti-extremism efforts, Taher assured that Jamaat remains committed to women's empowerment, highlighting that women constitute 43% of the party’s members — a figure he claimed is higher than that of any other political party in the country.
He also criticized the National Women’s Reform Commission’s stance on recognizing sex workers as laborers, calling it deeply disrespectful to women.
