Dhaka University administration launched formal proceedings against two professors who allegedly opposed the student-led July Movement, following recommendations from a fact-finding committee established to investigate student complaints.
On Thursday, April 24, Professor Dr Wahiduzzaman Chan and Dr Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman (Litu), both from the Institute of Education and Research (IER), face disciplinary action after the university's Syndicate determined that allegations against them were substantiated.
"The fact-finding committee submitted a detailed report based on their investigation and interviews with involved parties. The Syndicate reviewed the findings and reached a consensus that the allegations were substantiated," confirmed Professor Dr Sayema Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of Dhaka University.
University authorities made the decision during their highest policy-making body meeting held on Thursday. Professor Bidisha explained further steps would include issuing a preliminary charge sheet and consulting legal experts to ensure a proper process.
Students had already begun boycotting classes taught by two accused teachers due to their reported opposition to the July Movement, during which DU students played a crucial role in the nationwide uprising.
Professor Wahiduzzaman Chan faces additional scrutiny, having previously been investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission for alleged financial misconduct while serving as Vice Chancellor of Noakhali Science and Technology University. He has also been embroiled in controversy regarding policies on hijab.
