Notorious Proloy Gang has resurfaced in Dhaka University's (DU) student politics after a violent assault on Piyas, Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) leader, leaving him seriously injured. 4 Dhaka University students were arrested, sparking fresh concerns over campus violence and the return of politically affiliated youth gangs.
Former DUJA president Al Sadi Bhuiyan confirmed the arrestees were ex-members of the Proloy Gang, allegedly linked to campus gang culture, extortion, illegal water trade, and drug and weapon supply. Several were reportedly Bangladesh Chattra League (BSL) leaders backed by the organization.
On Friday, April 25, Khalid Monsur, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station, confirmed that four students from DU had been taken into custody, shown as arrested in the case, and subsequently produced before the court.
Police detained Ariful Islam Rony and S.M. Tamim Bin Yusuf from Islamic History and Culture Department, Md. Hasib Al Hasan from Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall, and Naimur Rahman Durjoy from Anthropology Department in connection with incident.
"Case has been filed and four arrested individuals have been sent to court. Further details will be known after investigation concludes," said Khalid Monsur.
Confrontation took place around midnight on Thursday in Chobir Haat area of Suhrawardy Udyan, where NCP members were having casual gathering. Police and intelligence sources report that argument broke out when motorcycle headlamp shone on NCP members' faces.
Situation quickly escalated, with group of 10-15 people allegedly attacking NCP member Piyas, who sustained severe facial injuries. Victim subsequently filed complaint leading to same-night arrests of four university students.
All four suspects were produced before court following formal arrest in case filed by injured party. Attempts to reach Piyas for comment were unsuccessful.
It is worth mentioning that Naimur Rahman Durjoy, one of the arrestees, was previously detained and expelled from the university in connection with the assault case involving DU student Zubayer Ibn Humayun.
