Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Thursday seized a large cache of explosives, including 99 crude bombs and 40 petrol bombs, from the Chakpara border area in Shibganj upazila.
The seizure took place around noon during a raid at the Koylabari Truck Terminal in Shahbazpur union, based on intelligence about a possible smuggling attempt.
Lt. Col Golam Kibria, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-59, disclosed the details at a press briefing held at the battalion headquarters later in the evening.
According to BGB, they had received a tip-off that a consignment of illegal explosives from India might be smuggled through the Chakpara Border Outpost (BOP) area, with the intent of delivery to Rajshahi. Acting on the intelligence, a BGB patrol team launched the operation.
As the patrol team arrived at the location, two suspects fled the scene, leaving behind two plastic crates. Upon inspection, the crates were found to contain 99 crude bombs and 40 petrol bombs.
BGB officials suspect the explosives were intended for subversive activities and said that an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those behind the smuggling attempt. Efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects.
