KHULNA, Apr 24: Police rescued three Sri Lankan citizens and arrested four abductors early today from Bagerhat.
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Khulna Range Police, Md Rezaul Haque on Thursday afternoon disclosed the matter at a press briefing held at his office.
Sharing the details of a recent rescue operation involving the abduction of three Sri Lankan nationals, who were kidnapped from Dhaka Airport and later rescued from Bagerhat, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Khulna Range Police, Md Rezaul Haque disclosed the matter at a press briefing held at his office On Thursday.
According to DIG Rezaul Haque, the three Sri Lankan citizens-Malavi Pathirana, Pathirana, and Thuppi Mudiyanselage Neel, arrived in Bangladesh on April 22 for business purpose at the invitation of a local businessman Shahidul Sheikh from Bagerhat.
Afterwards, Emdad Hossain, Jony Sheikh and SM Shamsul Alam, three accomplices of Sheikh Shahidul allegedly contacted the victims' families in Sri Lanka from a Bangladeshi phone number and demanded a ransom of Tk 25 million (approx US$ 230,000).
The families agreed to pay the ransom and attempts were made to transfer the money through accounts in four different banks, said DIG, quoting the rescued Sri Lankans.
