A fifth-grade student died under mysterious circumstances in Kurigram’s Phulbari upazila on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred in Balatari village of Naodanga union in the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Fatema Akter, 11, daughter of Nur Hossain and a student of class five at Balarhat Government Primary School.
According to family sources, Nur works in Dhaka and his wife Tuli Begum lives at home with their 11-year-old daughter Fatema and a seven-year-old son.
On Thursday afternoon, Tuli went to a neighbor's pond near their house to collect fish. After bringing the fish home, she went out again to fetch leaves for the goats.
Upon returning home with the leaves, she called out to Fatema but received no response.
Entering the house, she found her daughter's body hanging in the ceiling. Tuli's screams alerted neighbours, who rushed in and brought the student's body down. They also informed local police.
Upon receiving the news, police went to the scene and sent the body to Kurigram General Hospital for an autopsy after recovering.
Confirming the matter, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Nageshwari Circle) Mozammel Hoque said that it is not yet possible to definitively say whether it was a murder or a suicide.
