Govt is simplifying process of foreign investments: Bashir

Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin said the country's exports would not decrease despite cancellation of transshipment facilities by the Indian government.

He also said, "Efforts are underway to reduce costs of doing business by making maximum use of our own capacities. This will further reduce export costs and cost of doing business."

He made the observation as he was speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of the Meet Bangladesh Exposition in the city to Foster Export Competitiveness for Jobs project at the International Convention City Bashundhara on Thursday.

More than 120 companies are participating in two-day exhibition. International sourcing agents and buyers from various countries including Singapore, Libya, Colombia, Algeria, the United Arab Emirates, India, Bhutan, Maldives, Malaysia are participating. They will visit various Bangladeshi manufacturing facilities after the exhibition.

World Bank Bangladesh Senior Operation Officer and Acting Country Director Sohail Qasim and Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Asociation President Shamim Ahmed spoke as special guests at the event.

The Commerce Adviser said, "The government is taking all initiatives to simplify the process of bringing foreign business and investments into the country.

Among the several initiatives those were taken, include the launch of 'one stop service'. The path of discussion is open with the Ministry of Commerce and other affiliated departments on all business problems. "Any problem will be resolved," he said.
Commerce Adviser has urged foreign investors to take available advantage of investment opportunities in Bangladesh.

He further said "We should quickly diversify our exports which are now mainly dependent on one products. For sustainable economic growth, we need to utilize our growing population. For this, we need to promote skill, eliminate corruption and increase transparency."

He said, "Bangladesh Development Authority (BIDA) recently held a successful international investment conference to increase investment in the country. There, we informed foreign investors about our capabilities and opportunities."

"I sincerely respect the entrepreneurs in Bangladesh who have brought Bangladesh to this stage of development today despite various obstacles. I would like to thank those who have brought their products here to showcase to foreign buyers," he added.

World Bank Senior Private Sector Specialist Hosna Ferdous Sumi also spoke in the event. Additional Secretary (Export) of the Ministry of Commerce Abdur Rahim Khan delivsered the closing speech.
