An accused in the murder case of Primeasia University student Zahidul Islam Parvez has given a confessional statement before a Dhaka court today.
Mahathir Hasan, 20, provided his statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhajul Islam. Following the recording of his confession, the court ordered him to be sent back to jail.
Mahathir was arrested in the early hours of April 23 from a residence at Azad Tower in Chattogram’s Halishahar area.
The murder took place on April 19 when Zahidul Islam Parvez, a third-year Textile Engineering student at Primeasia University, and his friend Md Tariqul Islam were brutally attacked with locally made weapons by a group of assailants in front of the university premises.
Parvez sustained critical injuries in the assault and was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.
The following day, on April 20, Parvez’s cousin Humayun Kabir filed a case with Banani Police Station. The case names eight individuals and implicates a total of 25 to 30 people for their alleged involvement in the killing.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects.
