Students of Al-Hadith and Islamic Studies department of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia, have demanded the expulsion of a university official for making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The accused is Mozammel Haque, an assistant registrar of the department. He is a resident of Bhulia village under Taherhuda union of Harinakundu upazila in Jhenaidah district.
According to sources, Mozammel Haque was beaten by locals and handed over to police on Monday after he allegedly made offensive comments about Prophet (PBUH).
In protest, on Tuesday, students of the department broke nameplate of the accused official and submitted an application demanding his expulsion.
In response, the department formed a four-member investigation committee led by Professor Dr Shafiqul Islam. The other members of the committee are Professor Dr Syed Maksudur Rahman, Dr M Mostafhizour Rahman and Golam Kibria.
The application stated that Mozammel Haque referred to Prophet (PBUH) as “lustful toward women,” evidence also exists by locals to his bad comment about the prophet.
The students demanded that he be expelled from the department and given exemplary punishment.
Head of the department Professor Dr Akhtar Hossain said, “Students have submitted a complaint against Mozammel Haque for making offensive remarks about Prophet (PBUH), demanding his expulsion and punishment. We have already formed an investigation committee. Based on the findings, we will recommend action to the university administration.”
