Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will attend the funeral of Pope Francis, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam confirmed on Tuesday.
The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at the Vatican, following the pontiff’s death on Monday at the age of 88.
Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and head of the Catholic Church since March 2013, passed away after a prolonged battle with double pneumonia. He had been discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on March 23, after a 38-day stay.
His death came just a day after he appeared, visibly frail, on the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica to deliver his traditional Easter message, drawing cheers from thousands of faithful gathered in Vatican City.
Renowned for his progressive reforms and global outreach, Pope Francis’ passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from around the world, particularly among the Catholic community.
