Amid growing criticism on social media, noted author Dr Aminul Islam has resigned from his position as an advisor to the administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Mohammad Ejaz.
On Tuesday evening at around 7:30 PM, Dr. Islam announced his resignation through a post on his personal Facebook profile.
Dr Islam had been appointed to the advisory role on April 17, as per an official order issued by the city corporation. The order stated that under Section 53 of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009, and in accordance with the wishes of the administrator, Aminul Islam was appointed as an advisor. It was also mentioned that the position would be entirely honorary and unpaid. The order was issued with approval from the appropriate authority.
Following the appointment, the move sparked widespread criticism on social media. Numerous individuals raised concerns regarding his previous renunciation of Bangladeshi citizenship, among other issues. Some alleged that he was appointed at the request of Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, an advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives.
Dr Aminul Islam was born and raised in Dhaka's Nakhalpara. He completed his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) from Dhaka Residential Model College, graduated from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet, and later pursued his Master’s degree in Sweden. He earned his PhD in the United Kingdom. He is currently working as a senior lecturer in sustainable development at the Entrepreneurship University in Estonia, a country in Northeastern Europe.
Beyond academia, Dr Aminul Islam is a well-known and popular author, especially among the youth. His 2023 essay collection "Life As It Is" won the Rokomari Best Seller Award.
