Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that work on his long-awaited Mahabharata adaptation is finally set to begin. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor-producer shared that the ambitious project—one he describes as his “biggest ambition”—will kick off development this year, starting with a writing phase that could take several years to complete.
Though Aamir has not revealed whether he’ll appear on screen, he emphasized that his current role is that of producer. “Casting will depend entirely on who fits the character best,” he said, adding that decisions will be made with care and precision.
Given the epic scale of the Mahabharata, Aamir suggested that the project may involve multiple directors, taking inspiration from The Lord of the Rings model, where different units work simultaneously to manage the vast production. “If we go one film at a time, it could take forever. We may need several directors working together,” he explained.
Rumors about Aamir’s Mahabharata plans date back to 2018, with early reports suggesting a budget north of ₹1,000 crore. Although Aamir refrained from confirming financial details this time, he did reveal that his commitment to the project is so deep, he has already declined other major film offers to dedicate himself fully to it.
Back in 2022, during promotions for Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir spoke emotionally about the weight of adapting such a sacred epic. “Making Mahabharata is not like making a regular film — it’s like performing a yagya. You can’t afford to get it wrong. The epic won’t fail you, but you could fail it,” he told Galatta Plus.
Meanwhile, fans won’t have to wait too long to see Aamir on screen. He’s gearing up for his return in Sitaare Zameen Par, a spiritual successor to his beloved 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. Set to release in summer 2025, Aamir teased that his character in the new film will be “rude and politically incorrect” — a significant shift from his earlier roles.
