The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has issued a Red Notice against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, a figure who has long been the center of public interest for both controversy and public scrutiny in Bangladesh.
On Tuesday afternoon, AIG (Media & PR) of the Police Headquarters, Enamul Haque Sagar, confirmed the news to the media, stating, “Interpol has issued a Red Notice against former IGP Benazir Ahmed.”
Sources further revealed that Red Notices against 12 prominent individuals, including former fascist Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, are currently under review by Interpol.
In accordance with court directives and upon requests from either the prosecution or investigative agencies, the National Central Bureau (NCB) of Bangladesh Police is responsible for filing applications to Interpol for Red Notices.
According to sources within the NCB, a court in Dhaka instructed authorities to take necessary steps for issuing a Red Notice following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Subsequently, a formal request was submitted to Interpol in February this year. Citing allegations of financial corruption and criminal misconduct, Interpol officially issued the Red Notice against Benazir Ahmed on April 10 as part of an expedited action.
In a related development, the NCB submitted applications in three phases to Interpol for Red Notices against 12 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who reportedly fled the country in the wake of a mass student and public uprising.
